The Network held its first lunch event on 19 September.
We were hosted by the students at WelTec’s School of Hospitality in Wellington.
Twenty one attended and enjoyed a selection of fine food and beverages and enjoyed a speech by John Hayes MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee.
John’s interesting presentation touched on some ideas that the Network might consider to deliver on its aim to significantly increase the current level of NZ exports to Pacific Island countries. He also asked how the Network might effectively link with other agencies working on Pacific imports and investment initiatives. There was also a need to consider some of the negatives associated with doing business in the Pacific.
John’s thoughts will need to be given careful consideration as we grow the Network.
In the interim the focus will be on increasing membership of the Network and identifying barriers that inhibit Pacific exports and addressing those impediments to increasing trade.
A further event is planned for 22 October with details to be announced shortly.
